If you have spent any amount of time around crystals, you have probably heard both of these phrases over and over again: cleanse your crystals and charge your crystals. The problem is, people often use those terms as if they mean the same thing. They do not.
In most modern metaphysical practices, cleansing is about clearing or resetting the energy of a crystal, while charging is about refreshing that energy or directing it toward a purpose or intention. You do not necessarily have to do both every single time, and there definitely is not one universal rule that says every crystal needs to be cleansed under a full moon at midnight while you stand outside barefoot. 😂
So What Does It Mean to Cleanse a Crystal?
Cleansing is generally thought of as clearing away energy that a crystal may have picked up from people, places, or situations. Some people like to cleanse a crystal when they first bring it home. Others cleanse after using a crystal during meditation, ritual work, or a particularly emotional period. Some simply do it whenever the stone feels like it needs a reset. It can help to think of cleansing as clearing the slate. Just to be clear, energetic cleansing is not the same thing as physically cleaning your stone. One is part of spiritual practice. The other is getting dust, oil, or dirt off the surface.
What About Charging?
Charging is a little different. Once a crystal has been cleansed, some people like to charge it by placing it in moonlight, meditating with it, setting an intention, or using another method that feels meaningful to them.
If cleansing is clearing the slate, then charging is more like deciding what you want to do with that clean slate. Some people use charging simply as a way to reconnect with the stone. Others may focus on a specific purpose, such as confidence, calm, protection, creativity, or whatever else fits their practice.
There is no one correct method, and there is no required schedule.
The Easy Way to Remember the Difference
💜 Cleansing = clearing or resetting
💜 Charging = refreshing or directing
That is really the simplest way to look at it.
And yes, there is overlap. Some practices, like moonlight, are used by different people for both cleansing and charging. Metaphysical traditions are rarely as tidy as the internet likes to make them sound.
Common Ways People Cleanse Crystals
There are plenty of different methods, and some are safer than others depending on the stone.
💜 Sound
Bells, singing bowls, chimes, and other forms of sound are often used for cleansing. One nice thing about this method is that the crystal does not have to come into contact with water or another substance, which makes it a good option for delicate stones.
💜 Smoke
Incense or ritual smoke is another common method. As always, use proper ventilation and basic fire safety.
💜 Visualization
Some people simply hold the crystal, meditate, and visualize unwanted or stagnant energy leaving the stone.
💜 Moonlight
Moonlight is probably one of the most familiar methods. Some people use it for cleansing, some for charging, and some for both.
💜 Other Crystals
Clear quartz and selenite are commonly used in modern crystal practices for cleansing or charging other stones.
Can You Cleanse Crystals With Water?
Sometimes. But this is where people get themselves into trouble.
Not every crystal belongs in water.
Some minerals can dissolve, rust, become brittle, lose their finish, or otherwise be damaged when exposed to water for too long. The safest approach is not to memorize oversimplified internet rules like “anything ending in -ite cannot get wet.” That is not how mineralogy works. Learn what the actual stone is made of.
If you are not sure whether a crystal is water safe, just use another method. Sound, smoke, visualization, or moonlight give you plenty of options without risking damage.
And no, please do not assume that because something is called a “crystal,” it is automatically safe to soak in drinking water. Some minerals contain materials you do not want leaching into something you plan to consume.
Pretty does not automatically mean edible. 😂
Common Ways People Charge Crystals
Charging methods vary just as much as cleansing methods.
💜 Moonlight
💜 Sunlight, when appropriate for the mineral
💜 Meditation and intention setting
💜 Placing the crystal with clear quartz or selenite
💜 Using the crystal in a grid or altar space
Some people also work with moon phases, planetary days, seasons, or specific ritual timing. Again, none of this has to be complicated.
What About Sunlight?
Sunlight is another popular method, but not every crystal appreciates being left in a sunny windowsill all day. Some stones can fade with prolonged exposure to strong light. Amethyst is one of the better-known examples, but it is not the only one. That does not mean five minutes of sunlight is going to destroy your crystal. It simply means that repeated or prolonged exposure may affect certain stones over time.
If you are unsure, use a gentler method.
How Often Should You Cleanse or Charge Your Crystals?
There is no required schedule.
You do not have to cleanse your crystals every week because somebody on TikTok said so. 😂 Some people cleanse new stones when they bring them home. Some do it after ritual work. Some work with moon cycles. Some rarely do it at all.
The same goes for charging. Your crystals are not going to expire energetically because you forgot the full moon.
The point is to create a practice that feels meaningful to you while still respecting the physical stone itself.
Choose the Method That Makes Sense
Crystal cleansing and charging are both rooted in intention, symbolism, and personal spiritual practice.
You do not need an elaborate ritual. You do not need a cabinet full of supplies. And you definitely do not need to damage a beautiful stone because someone online told you every crystal belongs in salt water overnight.
Learn what you actually have. Choose a method that is safe for that mineral. Then decide what feels right within your own practice.
Because at the end of the day, intention should never require sacrificing common sense. 💜
